BBS05 - WordPress.com is Simply Awesome!
As a proud WordPress user, I attended the early demo presented by Matt Mullenweg (of WordPress). I thought it was going to be a basic “here is WordPress” like session. I must say, I was more than surprised by what I heard.
Matt announced WordPress.com, a new hosted version of WordPress. The feature set is really amazing - a completely managed version of the latest stable version of WordPress, domain parking, and on the fly category creation for starters. Then add on the awesome drag-and-drop administration interface, an advanced WYSIWYG editor, and it seems too good to be true. But it gets even better, it’s free!
Of course, WordPress.com is not available just yet. Today’s presentation by Matt was the first public demo. Stay tuned for more info.
On a separate but related note, I thought a couple of quick reasons for why I use WordPress might be helpful -
- Flexibility - WordPress adapts to your needs. If there is something you think is missing, chances are there is a plugin for it. Case and point, I wanted my blog to be tightly integrated into my web presence and utilized WordPress to do so.
- Customizable - Your WordPress template is completely customizable. CNET actually utilizes WordPress to manage its web presence.
- Vibrant Open Source Community - If you have a question, it will be answered quickly. The WordPress Codex and support forums are always updated frequently.

That’s cool. But how will they earn from it? Someone’s gotta pay the servers right? Did Matt mention about these hosted blogs to be laden with ads?

We have been offering a hosted blog service, using the WP platform for some time now and have over 20,000 WP blogs hosted. Checkout Blogsome. I believe the latest multi-user version lets you php directly into your template rather that having to amend a smarty template, which we have at the moment. I’ll be interested to see how they have made this secure on a hosted platform.

yuga - I spoke to Matt after his presentation. From what I understood, hardware was being donated to WordPress. Since so many businesses have utilized and customized WP, I guess it is there way of giving back to the community. So, I do not expect to see ads but don’t quote me on that.
